At least 84,979 people have been arrested across Zimbabwe since January in an ongoing operation geared towards curtailing cross-border crimes as authorities continue to tighten security along the southern African country’s borders.
In a statement, police said they had arrested 487 people countrywide on Boxing Day under the operation “No to Cross Border Crimes” in the latest such sting.
In addition to the arrests, the police destroyed 23 cabins along the Limpopo River in Ckikwalakwala used to harbour people suspected to be aiding illegal border crossing and smuggling activities in Beitbridge.
Illegal immigration has surged at Zimbabwe’s main border and several illegal crossing points along r Limpopo River this year prompting authorities to step up surveillance and screening of travellers at Beitbridge Border Post to restore the stability of the busy inland port of entry.
Police have repeatedly warned members of the public of the risk of arrest and prosecution if they use illegal exit and entry points.- CGTN
