President Emmerson Mnangagwa will address a rally at the Victoria Falls International Airport on Wednesday despite growing fears that Zimbabwe has entered the fourth wave of the Covid-19 outbreak.
On Monday, the country recorded 2 555 Covid-19 cases, the highest daily tally since July at the height of the third wave of the pandemic.
Matabeleland North also recorded a surge in Covid-19 cases with 104 recorded on the day.
According to a circular to party structures from Zanu PF’s Hwange secretary for transport Sikhanyisiwe Moyo, four Zupco buses will be dispatched across the Hwange West constituency, which includes Victoria Falls, to ferry people to the airport.
Mnangagwa was initially scheduled to address Zanu PF supporters at the Mfelandawonye grounds in Mkhosana’s ward 11 before the venue was moved to an
open space along Elephant Hills Road and subsequently to the airport.
Reasons for the shift in venues are not yet clear.
“His Excellency, the president will no longer be meeting people at the previously stated venue,” Moyo said in the circular.
“He will, however, meet people at the Victoria Falls International Airport on the same date, Wednesday 8th of December.
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
Moyo said Zanu PF supporters would be picked up from various bus stops in the city to be taken to the airport.
“Four Zupco buses have been availed to ferry people to and from the Airport and pick up points are as follows; Victoria Falls Busi Shopping Center at 630AM, Mfelandawonye Ground 630AM, Matetsi, Masikili Boom Gate at 6:30AM, Woodlands/Sikabela, Ndlovu Center at 6:30AM and Chidobe at Chidobe Shops at 7AM,” she added.
“Those with private vehicles are encouraged to ferry fellow citizens to and from the Airport. Let’s all come in numbers.”
Zanu PF’s Hwange secretary for administration Nkosinathi Jiyane said the meeting will be for residents to table issues they wanted addressed by the president.
