Masters Football Club took full advantage of Dragons’ inactivity last weekend by beating Ajax 2-0 to reclaim the top spot in the Chidobe Kachecheti Football League.
Masters, who went into the match sitting second behind Dragons and two points adrift, needed nothing else but victory in the Sunday afternoon league encounter.
And they did just that with a brilliant performance in front of a full house to dispatch a battling Ajax team that had themselves to blame for the loss after a couple of missed chances in the first half.
Ajax could have opened the scoring 16 minutes into the match, but Monde Mathe’s strike was saved by the Masters goal minder, Trust Tembo.
The second chance fell into the legs of Ajax youngster Isaac Tshuma who blasted his effort way over the bar with only the goalkeeper to beat.
It was one of those performances that Masters would love to watch time and again after they got their breakthrough 39 minutes into the match with a well taken goal from their new signing Marshall Tembo formerly of Lupinyo Bullets.
The calm midfielder controlled the ball outside the penalty box and took a dummy to the left before firing to the top right corner for the opener.
Masters got the second 60 minutes into the match, with their top goal scorer Chrispen Tembo registering his 16th goal of the season.
The win took Masters to the top of the log with 29 points, one ahead of second placed Dragons who have a game in hand and sit on 28 points.
Analyzing the match, Masters Captain Morblessing Mpofu said his team was where it is meant to be.
“We are back where we belong,” said a boastful Mpofu.
“We want to stay there up to the end and we are determined.”
Masters will pray that Dragon lose their match next week when they visit Zamalek and they win their match against Lupinyo Bullets.
If that happens, Masters will be almost champions looking at the remaining games they have to play against poor performers like Mopani.
In other matches Zamalek lost three goals to Lupinyo while Mopani beat Ziyabaluma.
