Tsholotsho woman throws baby in toilet

A 34-year-old woman from Tsholotsho has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for concealing the birth of her child.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect her identity, gave birth to a baby girl on October 4, and threw the body into a pit toilet.

She had been bleeding severely until a witness discovered her in the toilet and she revealed what had happened.

The woman had concealed her pregnancy since March.

A post-mortem examination revealed that the baby had died from severe prematurity.

The woman was charged with contravening Section 106 (1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform Act) Chapter 9:23, which relates to concealing the birth of a child.

She was sentenced to 10 months in prison by the Tsholotsho Magistrates’ Court.
