The Zimbabwe Republic Police has urged children, especially girls, to report cases of sexual abuse in their homes and communities without fear.
Chipo Feya from the Police’s Child Victim Friendly department recently addressed school children at Ndlovu Secondary School, emphasizing the importance of speaking out against sexual abuse.
“You must report these perpetrators, whether it’s your father or another relative,” Feya said. “Don’t be afraid, name them and shame them!”
The children responded with screams of joy, and Feya reiterated, “Are you hearing me, name them and shame them.”
Feya assured the children that the police are there to protect them and that there are organizations that provide shelters and support.
“If your father chases you away from home because you refused to have sexual intercourse with him, don’t worry, we have a place for you to stay,” she said.
Feya also encouraged parents to report children who are engaging in sexual activities, regardless of their age.
“We offer psycho-social support and counseling to help them,” she said.
When asked about when children should leave their parents’ bedroom, Feya responded, “That depends on the parent, but it’s essential to teach children about these things early on.”
Additionally, Feya advised parents not to marry off their children before they attain careers and jobs. “Let them pursue their goals and aspirations,” she said.
Overall, Feya’s message emphasized the importance of reporting sexual abuse and seeking help. “We are there to protect you,” she reassured the children.
