Hwange dominated this year’s edition of the National Association of School Heads (NASH) Matabeleland North provincial athletics tournament where it came out tops.
The tournament held at Victoria Falls’ Mosi oa Tunya Seconndary was the first in three years following Covid-19 induced lockdowns in Zimbabwe.
Hwange scooped 22 gold, 18 silver and 17 bronze medals top sit at the top of the table and it was followed by Binga, which bagged 21 gold, 17 silver and 10 bronze medals.
The tournament was well supported by locals, who rallied behind the Hwange team.
NASH’s Matabeleland North representative a Maipisi said the competitions had made a welcome return after the Covid-19 restrictions.
“We are so excited, I have ran out of words to express how we feel as a province,” Maipisi said.
“After the Covid 19 disruption of all sporting events we never thought we could have a carnival atmosphere such as this one.
“We are also thankful for the sacrifices that all districts made to make this event a success.
“It really surpasses all other athletics events we have held in the previous years.
“We have been missing this, as you can see for yourself.
“Athletes, parents and the corporate world are enjoying the exciting competitions.”
Matabeleland North provincial education director Jabulani Mpofu said he was impressed by the level of competition at the event.
“We are so happy and would not have asked for anything better especially post Covid era,” Mpofu said.
“The competition is so high and I’m pleased with the performance of both athletes and teachers.
“Similarly, I would like to thank the corporate world for responding to our distress calls when we knocked at their doors.”
The Hwange team will represent the province at the NASH national competition to be held at Peterhouse College in Marondera between March 23 and 24.
