In a historic move, President Mokgweetsi Masisi has declared a national holiday in Botswana to celebrate the achievements of Olympic gold medalist Letsile Tebogo.
The announcement was made this morning, and marks a momentous occasion for the country.
Letsile Tebogo, dubbed “Botswana’s Sensation”, made history by becoming the first Motswana and African to win a gold medal in the 200m race at the Olympics.
President Masisi recognized the significance of this achievement, stating that it was “markedly outstanding” and deserving of national recognition.
The President’s decision to grant a national holiday was made to honor Tebogo’s performance and to allow citizens to celebrate in a “unique, appropriate, and responsible manner”.
The holiday will be a moment for Batswana and residents to come together and acknowledge Tebogo’s remarkable achievement.
In a statement, President Masisi expressed his gratitude to Tebogo and his late mother, saying, “On behalf of all citizens, I applaud Letsile and give thanks unceasingly to his late mother.”
The declaration of a national holiday is a testament to the significance of Tebogo’s achievement and the pride that Botswana takes in its athletes. As the country comes together to celebrate, it is clear that this moment will be etched in the annals of Botswana’s history.
In a final message, Permanent Secretary to the President Emmah Peloetletse exclaimed, “A pula e lo nele ka masubelele, Batswana!” which translates to “A rainbow appears after the rain, Batswana!” – a fitting tribute to the joy and celebration that fills the nation on this momentous day.
