The Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery (ZEN), an animal welfare organisation, has announced that it will be releasing back to the wild seven mostly orphaned elephants after keeping them at its Harare sanctuary for years for rehabilitation.
In a statement, ZEN said the exercise will be carried out in the next few weeks, which will make it one of the most important elephant relocations in the country.
“It has been a long journey for these special orphaned elephants, from being rescued from almost certain-death to many years of loving rehabilitation at the ZEN Nursery in Harare, the organisation said.
“Now they take their next step to their new home in Panda Masuie in Victoria Falls.
“Here they will be cared for by our Panda team of carers and given the opportunity to interact with wild elephants and when they feel ready – they will leave us for a life back in the wild… Where they belong.”
The organisation said the translocation carries some bittersweet memories as they “are going to miss their antics, their powerful presence.”
Seven elephants that will be making this monumental move include Bumi, Coco, Limpopo, Sally, Unity, Kura and Moyo.
