Violent Victoria Falls imbiber to perform community service

A 20-year-old Victoria Falls man has been sentenced to perform 420 hours of community service after he struck another man with a brick on the forehead after he tried to stop a fight he was involved in.

Gibson Chihwehwete of Chinotimba suburb was convicted by Victoria Falls magistrate Linda Dzvene on assault charges.

Prosecutor Asher Chindedza said Chihwehwete assaulted Smile Ncube (30) for trying to stop a fight the convict was involved in with the victim’s friend during a beer drink on July 23 last year.

Chindedza said on the day at around 6PM at house number 7262 in Mkhosana suburb, Ncube was drinking beer with his friends Fredrick Nkomo and Muzwandile Sibanda.

Chihwehwe ask to talk to Nkomo about an undisclosed matter.

The two started arguing and this degenerated into a physical scuffle, forcing Ncube to intervene.

Chihwehwe went on to strike Ncube with a brick twice on the forehead.

Ncube was rushed to hospital, leading to the assailant’s arrest.

In court, Chihwehwe blamed alcohol for his violent behaviour and pleaded for a lenient sentence.

Dzvene handed him a jail term of 15 months before suspending three months for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence during the period.

The other 12 were converted to 420 hours of community service at government premises.
