Victoria Falls shopkeeper sentenced for theft

A Victoria Falls man who stole a bottle of Amarula liquor and braai cuts at a supermarket where he was employed for leisure treat has been sentenced to perform 105 hours of community service.

The court heard this when Cloapas Mpofu (42) of Chinotimba high-density suburbs recently appeared before magistrate Godswill Mavenge facing theft charges. 

He was convicted on his own plea of guilt. 

According to the state records, Mpofu, employed at Fruit and Vegetables supermarket in Victoria Falls on January 2, stole a 750 milliliters bottle of Amarula liquor, one kilogram of chicken drumsticks and 1.5 kilograms of pork chops all valued at US$50.

The complainant, Knowledge Dzimbahete was alerted about the incident by his son. 

“The complainant then followed the accused who was said to be at Mukali bar, and he found him with an empty bottle of Amarula and recovered the pork chops and the chicken drumsticks,” read the court records leading to the accused’s arrest. 

In his sentence, Mavenge cautioned Mpofu before handing him 10 months imprisonment six months was set aside on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.

The other three months were converted to 105 hours of community service at Chisuma Primary School. 

The remaining month was set suspended on condition that he restitutes the complainant his money for alcohol that he stole.
