The explosives are similar to those used in ATM bombings, police have said.

They were arrested on Wednesday at around 01:00 after police were called to the scene by South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members.

The suspects were found near the SANDF Support Base, crossing the border from Zimbabwe to South Africa.

They were carrying a backpack and two suitcases, said police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

“The suspects, aged 31 to 33, were arrested and taken to Musina police station, where their luggage was searched and commercial explosives discovered,” said Mojapelo.

Officers from the Musina Explosives Unit found the luggage contained six reels of detonating cord, 50 units of connector capped fuses and 65 blasting cartridges.

“Explosives of this nature were in the past found to have been used in ATM bombings at some places in the province, and the arrest of these suspects will potentially assist the police in curbing this crime,” Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe said.

The three suspects are expected to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of unlawful possession and smuggling of explosives.- News24
