Mvuthu League title race heats up

Ajax Football Club beat Dragons by two goals to one in an exciting match over the past weekend to stop them from early celebrations in the tightly contested Mvuthu League.

Dragons, who needed six points going into the past weekend double headers needed maximum points at all cost to secure the title considering results from other title chasing teams.

With Black Leopards doing them a big favour beating second placed Red wipers 1-0 on Saturday, Dragons failed to rise to the occassion and fell down after conceding from Ajax’s Phathisa Nyathi and Bright Dube scorers.

Although they managed to pull one back through their top marksman Mqabuko Ndlovu, it was not enough to stop them suffering their second defeat in 25 outings.

Their midfield was never present with Ashley Mlotshwa suspended after receiving a red the previous week.

It was all left for the striker Abel Ngwenya to control the game, but he was overpowered by the Ajax midfield of Obrien Moyo and Nyathi.

Elsewhere second placed Red Wipers lost 1-0 to Black Leopard at Edibheni Stadium on the same day that saw almost all top three teams losing, save for Lupinyo City who beat Super Eagles 4-0.

The loss by Red Wipers left Dragon 11 points clear at the top, with Ajax third 12 points behind.

At Chidobe, Zamalek beat Mopane by two goals to one with Johnna Ncube and Derick Dube getting the goals for the visitors.

On Sunday Dragons picked themselves up and defeated CerClass by three goals to two in a closely contested match at Emagodiini Stadium with Red Wipers also piping wounded Buffaloes by two goals to zero.

Elsewhere Lupinyo City were too strong for Eagles whom they edged by four goals to nil to put pressure at the top.

Zamalek also managed a win on Sunday games beating Lupinyo City by two goals to one in rematch after their first meeting failed to take place after Lupinyo City arriving late for the earlier scheduled match.

Zamalek got both of their goals from the league’s leading scorer Thinkwell Weza, who scored a brace.

Despite these mixed results all top four teams remained confident of winning the title with Dragons coach Lot Ndlovu insisting he was happy with the results.

“l am happy because my closest challengers for the title also lost their matches, but we are not happy with the results, we hope to put things in order.” Ndlovu said.

For Ajax, anything is possible according to the head coach Dumisani Moyo.

“Football is a tricky game, we still insist that we are winning the title.” Moyo.

On the lower league standings, Moro Moro’s league status is doomed after the team failed to win three matches in a row.

The league continues this weekend with a blockbuster of fixtures featuring derbies across the villages.

At BH26 Maransu Stadium, Red Wipers will welcome village rivals CerClass.

Across the village Zamalek will host Power Stars in a Battle for Bh36.

Ajax will travel to Lupinyo City, as Dragons face Masters in the battle set to be squared off at Chidobe.

On Sunday Zamalek will travel to Ndlovu with Red wipers hosting Lupinyo. Ajax tackles CerClass as Dragons host Mopane.
