Hwange schoolboy drowns while fetching water

A Hwange school boy drowned at a dam owned by the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) while fetching drinking water.

Thulani Mathe, a family spokesperson said Cius Phiri who was doing Form 2 at Gebhuza High School was in the company of a teenage friend when he drowned.

“It happened on Tuesday between 10 AM to 11AM, but his body was only retrieved yesterday around the same time by the (ZETDC) fire department team as his body could not be easily located.”

He said on the fateful day, Phiri and his friend were searching for scrap metal at a dumpsite for some Chinese companies based in Hwange.

” We understand as they were in that area, Cius felt thirsty and he decided to fetch water from the dam,” Mathe said.

“Unfortunately, he slipped, and he could not be rescued as the place was slippery and dangerous.

“The circumstances surrounding his death came as a a shock to us as a family, but we have to come to terms with it.”

He said Phiri will be buried on Friday.
