Chisuma man sentenced for assaulting neighbour

A Chisuma man in the outskirts of Victoria Falls has been sentenced to perform 210 hours of community service after he hit his neighbour with a bottle of beer several times on the head accusing him of interfering into his sister’s marital affairs.

Victoria Falls residents magistrate Godswill Mavenge recently heard this when Ndabenkulu Ndebele (42)  of Chisuma village appeared in court accused of injuring Lewis Maphosa (29) of the same village.

He was charged with assault and he pleaded guilty to the offence.

The state alleged that on December 26 last year and at around 5.30pm, the accused and the complainant were at Vulindlela Shopping Center drinking beer and a misunderstanding rose between the two.

“The accused asked to talk to me privately at the corner of the shop, but inside,” Maphosa said in his sworn statement.

“He immediately started to assault me with a bottle of beer three times on my head and forehead and as I questioned him about his actions, he told me that I was not supposed to interfere in the quarelling between my sister and her husband.”

According to the medical report, Maphosa sustained a cut on the forehead.

Before handing over the sentence, Mavenge strongly cautioned the accused against domestic violence.

He was handed 12 months imprisonment of which six months was suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence.

The remaining six months were altered to a sentence of community service.
