Alarm as children die in Matabeleland freak accidents

Police have raised alarm after two children died in freak accidents in Matabeleland North and South provinces in recent days.

A one-year child from Binga’s Manjolo area drowned after she followed her mother to a vegetable garden.

” On 28/12/21 at Manjolo, Binga, a one-year-old infant who had followed her mother to the garden, drowned in a well whilst her mother (18) was fetching some vegetables,” police said.

 

On the same day in Gwanda, another infant was run over by a scotch cart in her sleep as her mother was harvesting mopani worms.

“On 29/12/21 along Georgia-Garanyemba Road, Guyu, an infant was killed in a fatal road traffic accident when an animal drawn vehicle ran over the child while her mother, who had left the child lying by the roadside, was harvesting mopani worms,” police added.

On Christmas Day, three children from Bubi district in Matabeleland North died after inhaling a pesticide that their parents used to fumigate stored maize grain, police said.

 

The children aged seven, five and one died in their sleep at Jowa village in Inyathi.

On Boxing Day, a 12-year-old boy from Nkayi is suspected to have accidentally hanged himself while playing a “swing game.”

Police urged parents and guardians to be on alert to ensure the safety of their children.

 

” Parents and guardians are urged to always ensure the safety of their children,” police said.
