A deadly confrontation between detectives and armed robbery suspects in Bulawayo ended in a hail of bullets, claiming the lives of two suspects, Aleck Moyo (37) and Bongani Tshuma (41), on Sunday.
Acting on a tip-off, detectives from CID Homicide swooped in on a bushy hideout between Mpilo Hospital and Richmond, where the suspects were believed to be lying low.
But as the detectives closed in, the suspects opened fire, sparking a fierce shoot-out that would ultimately lead to their downfall.
When the detectives raided the area, the suspects opened fire, leading to a shoot-out. The suspects were overpowered, and two firearms – a Cannic pistol and an Astra Revolver – were recovered.
The suspects sustained gunshot wounds and were taken to United Bulawayo Group of Hospitals, where they died upon admission.
The police linked the suspects to five armed robbery cases between March 6 and July 29, including a robbery at Phatalika Village, Nyangazonke Sunyetsen, on May 7, where household goods and two vehicles were stolen.
The suspects were also linked to a robbery on July 29, in old Nkulumane 12, Bulawayo, where a Honda Fit vehicle and three cellphones were stolen.
The police reiterated their commitment to fighting armed robbery cases in the country, stating that “there is no going back” and that crack teams are in place to ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favor.
