A Dete woman is battling for her life after she was struck on the head with an axe by her 20 -year-old nephew during a scuffle over groceries.
Matabeleland North police spokesperson Inspector Glory Banda said Kudakwashe Gumbo from the Garikai Compound has been arrested over attempted murder charges after his vicious attack on Alice Dube (46).
“On Sunday at around 12 midday, the accused person was having breakfast outside their house while the complainant was sitting inside,” Banda said.
“Some minutes later the accused entered the house where the complainant was, armed with an axe and he struck (Dube) on the head without saying a word before running away.”
Fearing that he had killed her aunt, Gumbo allegedly surrendered himself to Dete police a few hours later.
“He thought he had killed her,” Banda said.
“The complainant sustained a deep cut on the right head and has been transferred from Dete Clinic to St Patrick’s Hospital in Hwange.
“The accused was interviewed, and he claimed that he struck the complainant with an axe because she and her husband were denying him a fair share of groceries, which were sent by his mother, who is working in South Africa.
“A witness statement could not be recorded from the complainant as she was unconscious.”
Banda appealed to members of the public to engage third parties whenever they have disagreements.
