Armed robbers hit Bulawayo women’s firm

Armed robbers stole over US$6 000 and 5 000 rand from a women’s Bulawayo empowerment company on Saturday, leading to dramatic scenes where police blocked streets  as they attended the scene.

Police in a statement said the robbers armed with pistols raided the company that also does money transfers at the building at the Fidelity Building in the central business district.

“The ZRP is investigating an armed robbery incident which occurred at a trust and women empowerment company at 6th Floor, Fidelity Building Bulawayo where two suspects armed with pistols attacked complainants and took US$ 6 270.00 as well as ZAR 5 000.00 cash,” police said in a statement.

“The company is also involved in money transfer.”

Earlier, there was a standoff inside the building amid reports that armed robbers that raided the money transfer agency were holed inside.

Police did not specify how the two robbers took off with the cash following the standstill, but sources said they suspected that the robbers had already left when police closed in.

Roads that connect to the building were also closed.
