The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it has intensified its nationwide operation targeting the carrying of knives, machetes and other dangerous weapons in public places amid growing concerns over violent crime.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, police said the operation, dubbed “No to Knives in Pockets / Ingqamu Idingani Esikhwameni / Banga Rinodei Muhomwe”, is aimed at curbing crimes such as murder, attempted murder and robbery.
Police said dangerous weapons are commonly being used in violent incidents occurring in liquor outlets, nightclubs, mining settlements and residential areas, where petty disputes often escalate into serious violence.
According to the ZRP, 15 people were arrested on May 18 under the operation, bringing the cumulative number of arrests to 346 since the launch of the crackdown on May 9.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that there is no justification for members of the public to carry knives, machetes or other dangerous weapons in public places,” the statement read.
Members of the public were urged to cooperate with police during stop-and-search exercises and report individuals carrying dangerous weapons through the National Complaints Desk or at nearest police stations.
