Lawmakers have proposed increased funding to improve the safety of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers and compensation for the families of detectives killed while carrying out their duties.
The motion, tabled by Exevia Maoneke and seconded by Pedzisayi Sakupwanya, recognises the role played by CID officers, particularly those investigating homicide, serious crimes and vehicle theft, in maintaining law and order.
According to the motion, detectives frequently face dangerous situations during investigations, sometimes resulting in the loss of life.
The MPs argue that many officers lack adequate protective equipment, exposing them to unnecessary risks while carrying out their work.
They are proposing that the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion allocate sufficient resources to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage to ensure CID officers are provided with appropriate protective clothing and safety gear.
The motion further recommends that Government establish compensation measures for families of officers who die in the line of duty in recognition of their service and sacrifice.
