The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) has urged members of the public not to kill snakes indiscriminately, saying the reptiles play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.
In a message to mark World Snake Day yesterday, ZimParks said snakes are often misunderstood despite the important role they play in nature.
“Today, we celebrate snakes—often misunderstood, yet essential to life in the wild,” the authority said.
ZimParks explained that snakes help control rodent populations, protect crops from pests and contribute to maintaining the natural balance of ecosystems across Zimbabwe.
The authority appealed to communities to replace fear with understanding and to avoid harming snakes whenever possible.
“On World Snake Day, the Authority encourages the public to avoid killing snakes indiscriminately. If you encounter one, stay calm, keep a safe distance, do not handle or provoke it, and seek help from trained wildlife personnel or local authorities when needed,” ZimParks said.
The conservation agency said every species has an important place in the environment and called on Zimbabweans to help protect wildlife.
“Let us replace fear with knowledge and protect every species, because each one plays a vital role in the web of life,” the authority added.
Human encounters with snakes are common in many parts of Zimbabwe, particularly during the warmer months and in areas bordering wildlife habitats. Conservationists say most snakes are non-aggressive and will avoid people if left undisturbed.
ZimParks advises the public to remain calm when encountering a snake, keep a safe distance, avoid attempting to capture or kill it, and contact trained wildlife personnel if assistance is required.
