Binga North MP Joseph Cumanzala has asked Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife Evelyn Ndlovu to explain what measures the Government is implementing to help communities in Binga District adapt to climate change.

In a question tabled in Parliament, Cumanzala requested an update on the Ministry’s plans to assist communities affected by droughts, floods and other climate-related disasters in the Zambezi Valley.

He asked Minister Ndlovu:

“What climate adaptation strategies are being implemented to assist communities in Binga District in coping with droughts, floods, and other climate-related challenges affecting the Zambezi Valley?”

The question comes as Binga continues to face recurring droughts, erratic rainfall and other effects of climate change that threaten food security, water availability and rural livelihoods.

Cumanzala also submitted several related questions to Minister Ndlovu seeking updates on Government plans to develop tourism around the Zambezi River, ensure local communities benefit from tourism, protect natural tourism assets and strengthen anti-poaching efforts involving local communities.

Beyond the Environment Ministry, the MP has also directed questions to the Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Water Resources Development on support for small-scale farmers, irrigation development, access to clean water and fisheries development in Binga, as well as how local communities will benefit from the Zambezi Water Project.

The questions have been deferred to future sittings of Parliament, where the responsible ministers are expected to provide responses.
